# The Vivienne Wins Icon Award—Her Dad’s Emotional Speech Steals the Show

At last night’s (26 February) Metro Pride Awards in central London, The Vivienne – real name James Lee Williams – was posthumously honored with the **Icon Award**. Her father, Lee, and sister took the stage to accept the accolade, delivering a heartfelt tribute that left the audience moved.  

In an emotional speech, Lee Williams expressed gratitude to The Vivienne’s fans for their unwavering support.

“James loved being part of the entertainment world, and I know he would have absolutely loved tonight’s event,” he shared.  

He recalled how thrilled The Vivienne was to be nominated for a Metro Rising Star award this year, making the night’s recognition bittersweet yet deeply meaningful.  

Through tears, he concluded: “Thank you to everyone for your huge love and support for James, thank you so much.”

The Vivienne, who shot to international fame after winning the first-ever season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019, was found dead at home in Chorlton-by-Backford on 5 January. She was 32.

Chester Police confirmed there were “no suspicious circumstances” surrounding her passing. However, an inquest earlier this month revealed she died of an “unnatural cause,” with further investigation ongoing.

After her historic Drag Race UK win, The Vivienne returned for the first-ever all-winners season in 2022. She quickly became a TV and theatre staple, competing on Dancing On Ice, appearing in Emmerdale, and starring in the West End’s The Wizard of Oz.

To honor her incredible legacy, five of her Drag Race UK sisters and closest friends took the stage for a moving tribute performance at the Metro Pride Awards.

TV host Rylan introduced the tribute with a powerful supercut of The Vivienne’s most iconic Drag Race moments, setting the stage for an electrifying performance.

Drag Race UK stars Baga Chipz, Danny Beard, Tia Kofi, Cheryl The Queen, and Michael Marouli then stormed the stage, delivering a high-energy routine to You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive—a song by one of The Vivienne’s all-time idols, Pete Burns.

Choreographed by Cheryl, the queens strutted through the venue, jumping onto chairs as the audience erupted in cheers, with images of The Vivienne illuminating the screens.

Later in the night, The Vivienne’s publicist Simone Jones, who first announced her passing in January, received the LGBT+ Trailblazer Award. After being presented the accolade by Girls Aloud stars Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, he dedicated it to his late client and dear friend.

“Viv was the absolute definition of a trailblazer, and her light will shine on us forever,” he shared.

Lexi Love, the high-energy queen who slayed on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 17, is making waves for more than just her iconic lip-syncs. She recently opened up about being HIV-positive while dragging the Trump administration for gutting vital LGBTQ+ and HIV resources.

On Trump’s inauguration day, his team wiped the Spanish-language version of the White House website, stripped accessibility features, and—brace yourselves—completely erased LGBTQ+ and HIV-related info from federal pages.

Lexi didn’t hold back, taking to Instagram to vent her frustration and share her truth. “This move directly impacts my health and well-being as a performer,” she wrote. “I’m personally affected by this and will do everything I can to find resources for myself and the community I’m connected to. I’m sorry, y’all—this is hard, it’s insulting, and it’s downright frustrating.”

Lexi’s unapologetic transparency is giving the fight for HIV awareness and LGBTQ+ rights a fierce new face.

Lexi’s post was flooded with support from her followers, but of course, a few trolls just had to show up, clearly clueless about why having HIV info and resources on government websites actually matters.

When one person asked, “Do people even go to the government website for that stuff?” Lexi didn’t hold back and shared her personal experience.

“I relied on a government-funded program for over 10 years—it’s literally the reason I’m still alive today,” she clapped back.

“My heart is shattered by how little education there is about HIV protection in our community,” Lexi wrote in the caption of a screenshot showing her clapback to the commenter. “I really didn’t think I’d have to explain myself like this today, but clearly, it’s necessary.”

By speaking her truth, Lexi’s joined the ranks of drag queens who aren’t afraid to risk it all by calling out those in power. It’s even more badass when you consider she’s a trans queen doing this in a political climate where Trump’s administration made it crystal clear—through executive orders, no less—that only binary male and female genders would be recognized. # RuPaul’s Drag Race stars and fans have expressed outrage after Tyra, the winner of the show’s second season, made a “vile” comment regarding the passing of fellow Drag Race icon, The Vivienne.

The Vivienne, whose real name was James Lee Williams, rose to fame as the winner of the first-ever season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2019. A representative for the renowned TV and theatre star confirmed on January 5 that the performer tragically passed away over the weekend at the age of 32.

As tributes poured in from across the entertainment industry—featuring heartfelt messages from Michelle Visage, Jinkx Monsoon, and Rylan—former Drag Race contestant Tyra sparked outrage with a deeply offensive comment.

Fans and fellow Drag Race stars were quick to condemn the remarks, branding them “twisted” and “cruel.” Two-time finalist Kandy Muse took to social media, saying: “I’ve defended you for years, but now you can absolutely go f**k yourself. If our paths ever cross, it’s absolutely on sight. You disgusting person.”

Tatianna, who clashed with Tyra during their time on season two, added: “Somehow, she’s become even worse.” Pink Chadora from Drag Race España called Tyra’s comment “cruel,” while season 13 alum Denali labeled it “horrible.”

One fan summed up the widespread sentiment by asking, “How miserable do you have to be to crawl out of irrelevance just to mock someone who has recently passed away? Viv’s legacy will far outshine yours.”

The controversy began when Tyra, previously known as Tyra Sanchez during her winning run on Drag Race season two in 2010, reshared a 2020 tweet from The Vivienne. The original post referenced Tyra’s reaction to Netflix accidentally spoiling Shea Couleé’s All Stars 5 win. In the tweet, The Vivienne joked: “Bet Tyra was fuming when she realised Netflix spoiled the win too. Sorry gal. You tried though.”

Following The Vivienne’s death, Tyra reposted the old tweet alongside the shocking comment: “Yet it doesn’t compare to the fumes of the crematorium.”

Many fans are now urging RuPaul’s Drag Race production company, World of Wonder, to strip Tyra of her season two title. Responding to the backlash, Tyra posted a follow-up statement declaring she “couldn’t give two f***s” if her crown was revoked.

This is not the first time Tyra has sparked controversy since her Drag Race win. In 2018, she was reportedly banned from DragCon, the franchise’s fan convention, after allegedly making threats about the event online.

Her legal troubles have also made headlines in recent years. In 2020, she was arrested for criminal damage after allegedly spray painting the phrase “don’t move here ever” on an apartment building. In 2023, she faced another arrest for reportedly threatening to shoot a police officer responding to a traffic incident. Later that year, she was arrested yet again for causing a traffic disruption by protesting in the middle of the road while holding a dildo.

In the official announcement of her death, publicist Simon Jones requested privacy for The Vivienne’s family, stating that no additional details regarding the circumstances would be released at this time.

Although Ludford and Williams had been divorced for over a year, they shared a six-year relationship before parting ways.

“We spent six amazing years together, full of love, and nothing can ever erase that,” Ludford said. Addressing Williams directly, he added: “I’m so grateful for the time we had. You were my partner, my husband, and such a significant part of my life for so long. You’ll always hold a place in my heart. I’ll miss you more than words can express. Rest peacefully, my angel.”

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, police were called to a property in Cheshire on Sunday following reports of a sudden death. While the cause of death has yet to be disclosed, both the police and Jones confirmed there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident.

# Drag Race star LaLa Ri has opened up about his decision to step away from drag. In October, the beloved performer shocked fans with an announcement on social media that he was leaving the drag industry behind.

After weeks of speculation, LaLa finally addressed his departure in a November 14 interview

**“How can I put this? I’m removing myself from the drag character. I’m basically removing the essence,”** he explained. 

**“I feel like drag places us in a box as artists and entertainers, and sometimes, in drag, you’re limited to what you can do artistically. I’d like to be considered a queer artist more than just a drag queen.”**

Reyes, an openly lesbian judge appointed by Biden, highlighted a pattern—leaders have used military readiness as an excuse to exclude marginalized groups, from Black people and women to LGBTQ+ individuals. Now, trans people are the target, she wrote in her 79-page ruling.

Trans people have served openly since 2021. Under questioning, federal attorneys conceded trans soldiers meet military standards and serve honorably. Reyes said the ban has caused "irreparable harm" and argued trans people deserve legal protection.

“The cruel irony,” Reyes wrote, “is that thousands of transgender service members have risked their lives to protect the very equal rights this ban seeks to take away.”

The lawsuit was brought by six active-duty members and two individuals seeking to enlist. Collectively, they have over 130 years of service and 80 commendations. Defense attorneys didn’t even argue they were unfit to serve.

Reyes slammed the ban as "rushed and haphazard," causing chaos and undermining military cohesion. It contradicts established policy and unfairly singles out those with gender dysphoria while allowing others with treatable conditions to serve.

The Defense Department’s justification? Reyes called it “inexplicably misleading.” The studies they cited didn’t assess trans service members already deemed fit. One study even found trans distress comes from discrimination—not being trans. Gender-affirming care, it said, improves well-being.

Reyes debunked cost concerns. The military spent $41 million on Viagra in 2023—compared to just $5.2 million on gender-affirming care, only 0.00057% of the 2024 budget. Past policies like "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" cost taxpayers over $600 million by discharging LGBTQ+ troops.


She mocked the administration’s priorities: “The president’s ban on paper straws contained more reasoning and scientific backing than this military ban.”

Reyes acknowledged legal appeals are likely but said her ruling preserves the current policy allowing trans people to serve without disrupting operations.

“The Court’s opinion is long, but its premise is simple,” she wrote. “All people are created equal. All means all. Nothing more. And certainly nothing less.”

Plaintiff Army Reserves 2nd Lt. Nicolas Talbott reacted with relief. “This is all I’ve ever wanted to do. This is my dream job. I was terrified I was about to lose it.”

Jennifer Levi of GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders called the ruling a victory for service members defending the nation. “The Court’s findings lay bare how this ban targets and undermines courageous troops. We are confident this ruling will stand strong on appeal.”

Two other legal challenges against the ban remain active in other courts.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Musk, who’s already facing backlash for a controversial gesture he made at Trump’s inauguration event. Many say it looked like a fascist salute, but Musk hit back on X, calling the accusations “tired” and “dirty tricks.”

Everyone Hates Elon isn’t slowing down. The group told The Hollywood Reporter that Musk’s Trump inauguration stunt was the final push they needed. “OK, Elon, if you’re going to show the world who you are, let’s show the world who Tesla really is,” a spokesperson said, urging people to hit him where it hurts—his business.

Their campaign isn’t just posters. “Swasticar” stickers have been popping up on Teslas, and they’ve gone after Musk’s X platform too. One striking poster reads: “Delete your account. If the bar lets Nazis in, it’s a Nazi bar.”

# The new memo from Trump paints trans soldiers as selfish, undisciplined, deceitful, and a threat to the military.

President Trump’s Department of Defense has issued a memo directing military leaders to identify transgender service members within 30 days and discharge them within an additional 30 days, enforcing his anti-trans military ban.

This memo reveals the first steps in putting the ban into practice.

Lesbian federal judge Ana Reyes has allowed the ban to move forward, rejecting attempts to block it despite lawsuits challenging its validity.

The memo also states that any service member diagnosed with or showing symptoms of gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service.

The future of trans rights in the military is uncertain as this controversial policy takes effect.

Under Trump’s new memo, trans service members can apply for a waiver to stay in the military, but only if they prove a "compelling government interest" and meet strict criteria, including 36 months of "stability" in their sex without any significant distress.  

The memo mirrors Trump’s previous insults towards trans service members, claiming that gender dysphoria conflicts with military standards like readiness, cohesion, and integrity.  

Judge Ana Reyes, reviewing legal challenges against the ban, condemned the language in Trump’s executive order, calling it “unadulterated animus” against trans individuals.

Trans military advocacy group **SPARTA Pride** pushed back, stating that thousands of qualified trans soldiers are already serving and will continue to defend the country regardless of the ban.  

Two lawsuits have been filed challenging the ban, citing discrimination based on sex and violations of free speech, as military recruiters have been instructed to stop accepting trans recruits.  

A 2016 RAND Corporation study showed that trans-related medical costs are negligible compared to the overall Department of Defense healthcare budget, and foreign militaries have successfully integrated trans soldiers without harming military readiness.

In a shocking shift, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has removed key protections against spying on LGBTQ+ individuals or groups, reports Bloomberg.  

This move marks a step back from the Biden administration’s efforts to expand federal protections for the LGBTQ+ community.  

Just two weeks ago, the DHS updated its policy manual, aligning it with **Trump’s** past executive orders. Those orders rolled back diversity and inclusion efforts, while insisting that only two sexes—male and female—exist.

The National Health Security Board has approved a budget of 145.63 million baht (£3 million) in its 2025 planning to support healthcare services for transgender individuals, addressing needs such as hormone therapy.

The funds will assist around 200,000 of the estimated 314,000 trans people in the country, ensuring equal access to medical care, disease prevention, and rehabilitation.

Trixie and David began dating in 2016, a journey that fans have followed closely over the past eight years. Alistair Keen, Birdland's head keeper, stated that discovering Magnus' true sex presents "another unique hurdle" in their breeding efforts, as it leaves only one female in the colony.

"It’s fascinating to confirm what we’ve long suspected, and we remain dedicated to supporting these amazing birds in every way," he added.

A new female penguin is expected to arrive from Germany in January 2025.

With Magnus being male, it turns out he has been involved in same-sex behavior, which is unusual for penguins.

# Another pair of male penguins in a Dutch zoo were so eager for offspring that they stole an egg from another couple.

The two penguins at DierenPark were found incubating the stolen egg in a nest near a male-female pair, zoo staff reported.

With hatching season underway, the males likely took the egg to raise as their own chicks. The egg was later returned to the parents.

The pair had previously attempted to incubate stones in their enclosure, and fostering is now being considered.

Female penguin renamed after staff find he’s actually gay 🐧

# Her doctor testified the treatment was justified because her parents might kill themselves because she's trans.

A 28-year-old trans woman in China, Ling’er, won a lawsuit after enduring three months of brutal electroshock conversion therapy. Ling’er, a performance artist, was forcibly committed to a mental hospital in 2022 after coming out as transgender to her parents the year before.

Her parents, who strongly opposed her identity, believed she was "mentally unstable" and sent her to a psychiatric facility in Qinhuangdao City, where she was tied down, diagnosed with “anxiety disorder and discordant sexual orientation,” despite identifying as heterosexual.

During her 97-day internment, Ling’er was subjected to seven traumatic sessions of electroshock therapy, which caused severe damage to her body. “Every time I underwent the treatment, I would faint,” Ling’er recalled. She described being restrained with her arms and legs fixed, something taped to her hands, and losing consciousness each time the power was turned on. The treatments left her with long-term heart arrhythmias.

Ling’er’s treatment violated Chinese law, which prohibits forced psychiatric treatments unless there’s a direct threat to safety. The hospital physician testified that Ling’er’s gender identity posed a risk to her parents’ safety, claiming they might harm themselves because of it. Ling’er was also forced to cut her long hair and wear men’s clothes, which she described as deeply painful and humiliating.

After her release, Ling’er returned home to find her parents had removed her feminine clothes and cosmetics, replacing them with a male wardrobe. In the months that followed, her parents confiscated her hormone pills, prompting Ling’er to flee. Packing only a small pink suitcase, she left her hometown and found a place to stay for one night before leaving by car the next day. Despite the emotional and physical abuse, Ling’er’s lawsuit resulted in a modest $8,000 award, though she hopes her victory will help protect the rights of others in the LGBTQ+ community.
