# Her doctor testified the treatment was justified because her parents might kill themselves because she's trans.

A 28-year-old trans woman in China, Ling’er, won a lawsuit after enduring three months of brutal electroshock conversion therapy. Ling’er, a performance artist, was forcibly committed to a mental hospital in 2022 after coming out as transgender to her parents the year before.

Her parents, who strongly opposed her identity, believed she was "mentally unstable" and sent her to a psychiatric facility in Qinhuangdao City, where she was tied down, diagnosed with “anxiety disorder and discordant sexual orientation,” despite identifying as heterosexual.

During her 97-day internment, Ling’er was subjected to seven traumatic sessions of electroshock therapy, which caused severe damage to her body. “Every time I underwent the treatment, I would faint,” Ling’er recalled. She described being restrained with her arms and legs fixed, something taped to her hands, and losing consciousness each time the power was turned on. The treatments left her with long-term heart arrhythmias.

Ling’er’s treatment violated Chinese law, which prohibits forced psychiatric treatments unless there’s a direct threat to safety. The hospital physician testified that Ling’er’s gender identity posed a risk to her parents’ safety, claiming they might harm themselves because of it. Ling’er was also forced to cut her long hair and wear men’s clothes, which she described as deeply painful and humiliating.

After her release, Ling’er returned home to find her parents had removed her feminine clothes and cosmetics, replacing them with a male wardrobe. In the months that followed, her parents confiscated her hormone pills, prompting Ling’er to flee. Packing only a small pink suitcase, she left her hometown and found a place to stay for one night before leaving by car the next day. Despite the emotional and physical abuse, Ling’er’s lawsuit resulted in a modest $8,000 award, though she hopes her victory will help protect the rights of others in the LGBTQ+ community.
